Clinical Information

  • A malignant neoplasm composed of cells resembling histiocytes.
  • A malignant neoplasm of large lymphocytes, which resemble histiocytes.
  • A rare, usually progressive disorder comprising an invasive proliferation of neoplastic histiocytes. Many previous cases are now thought to represent anaplastic large-cell lymphoma.
  • An aggressive malignant neoplasm with a poor response to therapy, usually presenting as stage iii/iv disease. It is characterized by the presence of neoplastic cells with morphologic and immunophenotypic characteristics similar to those seen in mature histiocytes.
  • An antiquated term referring to cases of systemic non-hodgkin lymphomas which are composed of large, atypical neoplastic lymphoid cells and cases of hemophagocytic syndromes. In the past, cases of anaplastic large cells lymphoma were called malignant histiocytosis.
  • An antiquated term referring to large cell lymphomas.
  • An outdated term referring to non-hodgkin lymphomas made up of large abnormal lymphoid cells. Histiocytic lymphomas include mature b-cell and t-cell non-hodgkin lymphomas. Many tumors that were once called histiocytic lymphomas are now considered to be a type of large cell lymphoma.
  • Malignant neoplasms composed of macrophages or dendritic cells. Most histiocytic sarcomas present as localized tumor masses without a leukemic phase. Though the biological behavior of these neoplasms resemble lymphomas, their cell lineage is histiocytic not lymphoid.
