Clinical Information

  • Treponema carateum causes an endemic bacterial infection characterized by chronic skin lesions. Early lesions include papules and erythematous plaques, while late lesions involve hypochromic, achromic, hyperpigmented, and atrophic areas. In advanced stages, these skin lesions can lead to bone and cartilage destruction, resulting in disfigurement.
  • This infectious skin disease, caused by Treponema carateum, is found only in the Western Hemisphere and typically occurs between the ages of 10 and 20. It is marked by significant changes in skin color and is believed to be transmitted through direct person-to-person contact.
